TAFAWA BALEWA POST GRADUATE HALL PRESIDENT DRAGS HALL REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL AND OTHERS TO COURT

Consequent upon the excutive council meeting of the Tafawa Balewa Postgraduate Hall held on the 23rd of August, 2011 at the television room of the hall.

The president of the hall executives,Mr Akinfenwa Bello has charged all the members of his cabinet to the Oyo State High Court for wrong accusation and assault on his personality.

According to Mr Akinfenwa;   ” I am disappointed in the people I call my executives. How can they possibly accuse me of all those charges. I am a good christian and cannot flirt around with girls that come around me. They just come around to say hell to me. Tell me;    Should I tell them to stop coming?”

He added that he had heard the rumours being spread about him, and could not believe that his cabinet members could confront him with such accusation. He added that it was a big slap on his face and that he had to charge them for assault on his personality.

Commenting on the issue, one of the accused cabinet member, Miss Bella said that she had absolutely no idea of what the president was accused of.She added however that the hall executives could not have accused him wrongly. They must have seen something being accusing him.

The hearing of the case is to come up on the 10th of September, 2011.

SOME 2008/2009 POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS YET TO GRADUATE

The 2008/2009 set of the Postgraduate Graduate School, the University of Ibadan are yet to graduate due to some irregularities in their academic calendar.

This was made known by one of the affected students of the postgraduate school, Joseph Obong on Tuesday, the 30th of August, 2011.

According to him,:  “Inspite of the fact that the University of Ibadan is widely regarded as; ‘The first and the best’ only among Nigerian Universities, it has not risen to the challenges of being the best University around.”

He stated further that it is clearly spelt out in the admission letter given to students that a masters degree programme is supposed to run for a period of eighteen (18) months, but unfortunately for a large number of the postgraduate students running their masters programmes in the school, they have spent three (3) years in the school without any hope of finally completing their programme.

In the same vein, Yemi Ojo, a former student of the PG school who studied Visual and Creative Arts claimed that he finished his programme in the year 2009, and up till the moment of interview, he has not got his cerificate.

He therefore opined that the University of Ibadan should look for proper solutions to these problems or suffer a loss of prestige.

RUNNING A POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN IS HELL- EKELEME NDUBUISI

“Running a postgraduate programme in the University of Ibadan is hell,it is highly rigorous and tasking,it is even more frustrating especially if you were not a student of the university as an undergraduate”
This statement was made by Ekeleme Ndubuisi,a postgraduate student of the Theatre Arts Department of the University of Ibadan on Monday, the 29th of August,2011 at the Theatre Arts Department of the university during the dress rehearsals for a drama which the department was planning to stage in order to celebrate the out-going undergraduate finalist of the department.
According to him, “Running a postgraduate programme in UI is highly rigorous, beginning from the application process which is usually done on-line.The process entails one visiting the internet and logging on to the postgraduate school’s portal. This usually takes almost half of a day before one can make any considerable progress”.
He also added that not only do they have to make presentations on a frequent basis, they also have to make their papers available to everybody present during their presentations. He said that this usually costs them huge sums of money which they sometimes have to borrow from family and friends.
He added that the worst of all is that, postgraduate programmes such as the masters degree, which is supposed to run for a period of eighteen (18) months most often exceeds the designated duration, and runs for twenty-four (24) months.
He urged the management of the postgraduate school to look into the problems bedeviling the postgraduate students, especially the duration of running the masters programme and also the problem of lack of proper representation of the postgraduate students in the decision making process in the school. This he said would improve the image of the Postgraduate School,Ibadan, and also make the University of Ibadan truly “The first and the best”

FORMER  POST GRADUATE HALL EXECUTIVES TO FACE AUDIT COMMITTEE FOR MISMANAGEMENT OF FUNDS

The former executives of the Abdulsalam Abubakar Postgraduate Hall, the University of Ibadan, was on Monday,15th of August,2011 summoned to face an audit committee for an alleged crime of funds mismanagement.

This announcement was made shortly before the hand-over ceremony which featured the swearing in of the newly elected executives of the hall.

The chairman of the audit committee reported that the recently out gone executives were only able to tender empty receipt booklets, empty vouchers and incomplete statement of accounts.

He also stated that the duplicates of the receipts which were supposed to indicate the amount of money coming into the hall’s coffers were also missing. He added that the financial statement which was submitted to him by the past secretary was full of ambigious expenditures.

He added in his words: “We have requested for another financial report from the past executives, and up till now, they have not made any response to our request.I also have reasons to believe that they have changed their phone numbers”.

Speaking on the development, one of the residents of the hall, Mr Chukwuka Chigbo said that the faulting administration increased the hall dues in the beginning of their tenure, promising to improve the living conditions of the hall. He explained that they ended up enriching themselves with the hall residents’ dues.

In an interview with the governor-elect of the postgraduate hall, Mr Osigwe Augustine, he explained that: “I met less than five thousand naira in the hall’s account. This makes it impossible for me and my cabinet members to carry out any programme for the benefit of the hall and its residents.”

Speaking further, he expressed bitterness over several important issues which the past executives did not give attention to. He said that the Hall press organization had become moribund due to insufficient funding, toilets and kitchenettes with bad plumbing and many more anomalies which his new tenure had to attend to.

He urged the hall management to make sure that full justice should be meted out on the offending executives and that they recuperate the embezzled funds so that his administration would have some financial resources to organize programmes for the hall.

CLA STUDENTS TURN LIBRARY INTO A DUMPING GROUND.

The head of department,Communication and Languauge Arts,University of Ibadan,Dr Ojebode Ayobami has recently adjusted the period at which the departmental library would be open to students and also ordered the withdrawal  of the library’s keys from the executive members and the student librarian.
This was due to the fact that some students who studied overnight in the library on Tuesday 9th of August,2011,messed up the library leaving dirts such as groundnut shells, empty bottles of soft-drinks,biscuit wraps and water sachets on the reading tables.
While addressing the students on Wednesday morning at the Large Lecture Theatre,Dr Ojebode said:
“it was very appalling when I saw what happened. The students messed up the whole library and refused to clean it up.The wireless connection of the faculty was tampered with in the process”.
Reacting to the ugly development,Miss Folake Famakinwa,a 400level student of the department, said that she was really disappointed with the actions of those students, adding that they did not potray the department in good light.
She however pleaded with the HOD to rescind the decision of locking up the library, saying that that would not be the best solution especially now that examinations are forthcoming.
Meanwhile, the HOD,Dr Ojebode said that there would be a meeting with all stake-holders on how the library would be managed thenceforth.
